Impressions

Don Levan was cool enough to case the hotel for us and here are some of his comments:

First off, this place is great. Definitely the coolest hotel I have seen in NYC. There are others that are nicer, but this hotel has style. Just about every piece of furniture or fixture is a found object. Every room that I saw had an acoustic guitar and a turntable with vinyl records.

The lobby has comfortable couches and a long metal desk that would sit about 15-20 with laptops for a hackfest if such a thing should materialize (not as easy with FileMaker as it is a Rails Conf, but who knows). There is also rumored to be a boxing ring in the basement (a hold over from when there were speakeasies in the neghborhood and the Times Square theater district ran into the 20's).

Though the block and exterior is somewhat nondescript, it is in the middle of the Costume Jewelry district, is three blocks from Korean row (great food), ten blocks from Union Square (great food and a farmers market on Friday and Saturday), and two avenues from Park Avenue South (great food).

The two larger style rooms would be appropriate for presenting, though the loft style room will be the best fit. Those rooms will accommodate 15-20 (perhaps more) siting or standing at a long metal table, couch, and empty space. The tv in that room was a Phiiips flat panel with Ethernet, USB, RCA Video, SVideo, and HDMI inputs (I am not sure how the Ethernet or USB connectors work on that tv so I would depend on one of the other input types).

The middle size room has a sitting area, a bed, and a smaller Phillips flat panel tv with RCA, SVideo, and HDMi Connectors.

Presenting & Tech

So if you have access to one of the larger rooms you can use the TV instead of a projector provided you have a DVI to HDMI cable.

Don Levan also arranged for a 15% discount on projector rentals from Tekserve (which is just 6 blocks away in case your Mac goes sideways while you're here). Mention "Pause on Error". Subject to availability.

I will have a spare projector. VGA with VGA to DVI adaptor. If you have a newer mac you will need a mini DisplayPort to VGA adaptor - http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB572Z/A?fnode=MTY1NDA3Ng&mco=MzE4ODUzMg
